What Are the Shalom Community Churches?
A United Methodist collaborative actively receiving God's grace and seeking God's courage by supporting, developing, and nurturing urban programs of faith, love, and justice through sharing of resources, missions, and celebrations. Alone we are limited; together we are empowered.
In January 1996, ten United Methodist Churches in South Minneapolis covenanted to work together for Shalom- the peace-of the city. Our initial goal was to form working relationships among the Shalom Community Churches to support the vitality of the ten congregations, to help them to minister effectively as servants of God's shalom, and to foster cooperative efforts to address the issues and concerns of the central city. Since then, our ten congregations have grown to twelve member congregations. Each of our congregations has gifts and graces that enrich our common spiritual life or sense of community, our passion for social justice, and our ethnic and lifestyle diversity. As individual congregations, we may feel isolated and powerless. When we come together as a Shalom Community, we become a people of faith who celebrate our diversity and our unity of vision.
And the history goes on...
